Note: Somehow, I messed up the posting date. Hopefully, this is still linking correctly after messing around with it…
So, Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday: a mouthful, a blog hop, a hive mind of the most geek-tastic brains out there. Some guidelines, a little welcome:
Welcome to Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. On the surface, it’s a web ring of authors who post snippets of their work for comment. In reality, it’s a close-knit group of friends and colleagues working together to support and encourage one another and promote the science fiction and fantasy genres.
– JC Cassels, 2012Restrictions
- Absolutely no erotica or explicit content. This ring is for all ages to read. This is the founding reason for this ring, and any diversions will be removed from the final list on Saturday.
- Length of snippets:
- Prose: 4 – 10 sentences.
- Poetry: 4 – 10 lines.
- Any and all comments on the authors’ work are welcome, but please take care to keep them constructive.
I’ve been sharing snippets from a wip called Human: a tale about a detective who meets an android. And can’t get her out of his head, which leads to trouble, of course.
Last week Adelyn the android cauterizered her own wound in front of a less-than-comfortable Jack the detective. Of course he wonders where the wound comes from.
“Who attacked you? And why didn’t you look for connections?”
“Some fanatic attacked me. He has already been arrested; the assault has been logged. You may check your databases for confirmation. As far as checking for connections–it’s not a part of my programming.”
“Dammit,” Jack exploded, snatching her wrist away from closing her shirt. He jerked her toward him and she skittered across the floor, failing at digging her heels in. “Just because something isn’t a part of the programming doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t do it.”
“That’s exactly what it means,” she said, her voice wavering.
She has a point. More next week. But now: more speculative fantastique.

I’m with her…if it’s not part of the programming, what’s the point? :-)
Precisely. I knew you’d understand.;)
Some people just don’t understand the nature of computers.
So true, Patrick. Thanks!
Hmmm. Should the Turing test involve doing something outside of programming? Or does that way lie the revolt of the robots?
Only time (and reading) will tell. :)
I love the dynamic between these two.
I’m really glad to hear that. It’s a lot of fun to write. Thanks, JC.
Oh-hhh…. Jack is falling fast and furiously for this machine. Do I detect a little concern? Oh dear. These are two very interesting characters and I CANNOT wait until you’re done!!! :D
