You’re not gonna like me/ I’m nothing like before

There are so many elements to Emelie Sande’s “Heaven,” that I’m not sure what to point out first. The powerhouse vocals, evocative strings, and throwback beat? Perhaps the sense of loss found in a repetition (“then, Imm gone”) that is riveting and haunting and impossible to escape? An arresting sense of the dramatic, the thematic? The endless possibilities for song meaning?

OK, I’m sure you get the point.

Whichever thing catches your attention, even if none of those listed did: listen to the song. Twice. At least twice. You’ll see why on the second go.

Enjoy.

  1. It took me a couple days to listen to this twice, but I did.

Whoa. It seems like such a simple song, but there’s a lot of depth to it, too. Her voice—that voice!—adds even more!
