Special (#SFFSAT)

So, Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday: a mouthful, a blog hop, a hive mind of the most geek-tastic brains out there. Some guidelines, a little welcome:

Welcome to Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. On the surface, it’s a web ring of authors who post snippets of their work for comment. In reality, it’s a close-knit group of friends and colleagues working together to support and encourage one another and promote the science fiction and fantasy genres.

– JC Cassels, 2012

  1. Absolutely no erotica or explicit content. This ring is for all ages to read. This is the founding reason for this ring, and any diversions will be removed from the final list on Saturday.
  2. Length of snippets:
    • Prose: 4 – 10 sentences.
    • Poetry: 4 – 10 lines.
  3. Any and all comments on the authors’ work are welcome, but please take care to keep them constructive.

I’ve been sharing snippets from a wip called Human: a tale about a detective who meets an android named Adelyn X. And can’t get her out of his head, which leads to trouble, of course.

The last time you saw me (before I fell off the face of the Earth), Jack and Adelyn tracked down Dr. Geoffrey Hart. After meeting his lovely assistant, they got into some questioning. We’re getting some answers about Adelyn.

Glancing up warily at Adelyn, Hart said, “Adelyn is very…special, even more special than even we knew.”

“The group who oversaw her creation and the creation of the other nine.”

“OK. How is she special?”

“All of the Ten are special. Androids that mimic humanity to a t. Droids mixed with a level of controllable picotech that has never been seen. But Adelyn, she’s done what I only thought was theory.

She’s evolving.”

Dun dun dun! More next week (as long as no gaping chasm opens beneath Atlanta, Georgia). But for now: there are more snippets to go, and they’re worth a wonderful hour of Saturday reading.

  1. I’m addicted to this story. You leave it at such a great cliffhanger moment, too! And this brings up a question: What about the other nine?

    Excellent, as always, JM!

  2. There’s so many sparks in this snippet – the mysterious “we”, the other nine, she’s evolving. I love that you put out enough line to get us tangled but keep us chasing the bait too (I have no idea why that turned into a fishing reference)

  3. I’d go so far to say that a being that (presumably) never dies could evolve over time…enjoyed this one, along with all of the other snippets I’ve seen over the time I’ve been reading them. I, too, wonder about the other nine.

  4. But Adelyn is special, even in comparison to the other nine – she is the one who is evolving. How? Why? And where does this lead us? Deep questions that keep the reader demanding more. This is a great sequence – where to from here?

    1. I love love love that what you picked out to talk about was that she was special even in comparison to the other nine. <3 I'm glad you enjoyed. We'll see more next week, but what they do about the extra nine is a mystery. At least until I can get someone to publish the book.
